Get Ready To Go Nuts! We Tried!

The Annual White Squirrel Festival was held on Saturday and Sunday May 23rd & photo op.jpg24th, 2009 in downtown Brevard, North Carolina. I mostly sold t-shirts and told visitors where to find a white squirrel.  The vendor across from me had a rescued white squirrel in a cage, but I encouraged folks to roam over to Brevard College. The squirrels are almost tame there as the students feed them.

start line.jpgDespite  race.jpgintermittent rain, the 3rd annual Squirrel Box Derby drew a good crowd. I was the time-keeper for the late afternoon races. There were some new entries along with the familiar carts from previous years. I missed the Sunday races, as I slept in and watched the rain. When I arrived on Sunday to sell t-shirts, I noticed that the rain had driven away many folks, but the music acts were still performing. I sold lots of t-shirts and enjoyed talking to the folks who were roaming about.

The winning cart was built by Comporium which is the local telephone and cable company. This was their first year to compete. squirrel cart.jpgThere were also categories for "nuttiest" and "squirreliest".

Also back this year was the Brevard Rotary's Annual 5K/10K White Squirrel Race. I had heard that they wear white tails, but that was not the case this year. entertainment.jpgThere were over sixteen musical acts over two days and they did not have the music so loud that your ears hurt. The White Squirrel Festival was recently voted "Best Spring Music Festival in Western North Carolina" by the readers of the Asheville Citizen Times. It is a really nice festival....family-oriented, relaxing, and fun. Try to make it next year.

In case you are wondering, there really are white squirrels in Brevard.  Here is a picture of the one who visits me at my house.
